Information Technology - The tools used
 to perform the work

There is a wealth of undiscovered opportunities within your grasp -- without adding a new information technology system. Technology is an area where most companies spend a lot of money to enhance their operations. Money well spent in most cases, but not usually obtaining the full benefit. It is important to

determine the return on investment (ROI) from your  technology initiatives, but it is essential to go further.

Here's the issue -- emphasis is placed on doing the proper due diligence for  the next investment to ensure a good ROI decision is made. There is no question that this is a wise and necessary practice, but it is not enough (and short-sided).

Go the next step - beyond the implementation. What most  organizations are not talking about, but should, is the fact that most information technology implementations do not result in the systems being fully utilized --  which is not necessarily the fault of the IT project.

You can obtain a great ROI but still not realize the most from the effort. And for those investments with a questionable return, there is still hope.  It is not a matter of IF there are opportunities to get more out of your information technology, just where to look. Your organization will be more effective if you are utilizing every aspect of your technology tools.

I've been working in the computer industry now for over 23 years. During that time, I've had the unfortunate circumstance to work under many incompetent project managers. I don't mean the word incompetent as an insult - it's just that in the Information Technology industry, we tend to promote programmers, engineers and analysts to management and supervisory positions and, well, just expect them to do well.

I've never really understood how anyone can expect a person who is trained as a programmer to suddenly be able to manage a project. It takes years and years of specialized training to become just a good project manager, much less an excellent one. In fact, I would say, having managed my own share of projects, that this is one of the downright hardest things anyone can do.  More>>
