Processes - How work is performed

At first glance, this may appear to be the easiest detail (processes) to master. So why are there so many activities going on within an organization that can not be justified? Identifying all the processes is hard enough and viewing the interactions between them just adds another level of complexity. To obtain a really effective operation, both of these tasks are necessary to move to the next step.

Once done, start to look at each from a value perspective -- what value does this activity provide? Is it necessary? Can it be eliminated? Can it be improved? Should it be performed by someone else (inside or outside of the organization)?

It is important to identify the mission critical processes and make sure they are at top form, but do not stop there.

Every step of a process you eliminate, creates added time to perform another task or achieve another value.  If you add up all of the time savings over a period of time, you will see that it can equate to large time savings -- just like adding staff without the added costs.

The Synergy Paradigm
by John Maceda

Editorial Note: The value of synergy when it comes to operation a business is easy to understand, but many organizations have difficulty applying synergy to the entire operation. Following is information on applying synergy to any business  Kay Graham-Gilbert

Synergy: {n} The working together of two things to produce an effect greater than the sum of their individual effects.

Most businesses operate on two distinct levels:

•Human Systems – Those systems that are concerned with or operated by people.
•Process Systems – Those systems that are functional or mechanical in nature.

Each of these systems is independent of the other and each has its own characteristics and needs. Human systems and process systems do not generally have the same challenges or solutions although they must work in total synergy in order to achieve the greatest success.
