Performance Management
must include the management of daily operations:

Does it take months to introduce a new product/service, when it needs to take
weeks or even days to meet demands?

When a change in product design, customer order or market condition is received,
do things seem to go haywire?

Is it difficult to re-align your processes, people, and technology in response
to shifts in customer requirements?

Is most of your time spent on day to day issues, leaving little time to reflect?

Dear Decision Makers,

You have heard it many times: create business strategies, write down your goals, become a leader, and take action. There is loads of information out there on these subjects and you have probably read many articles and books, attended seminars, taken classes and participated in discussions on these

management subjects. But there is something missing isn't there? They are all easy to understand; nothing overly complicated - it is not rocket science.

I used to think that "taking action" was the key ingredient and not taking action is what keeps us from succeeding -- and this is very true, but you have to look deeper. The answer lies in the details of the "action" and the management of those actions -- The right business strategies for optimum performance management.

Let me explain

You may have decided that one of your business strategies is to create more revenue by nurturing your existing customers rather than going after new customers. You have written down several goals (e.g. turn 20% of existing customers into repeat

customers within 60 days). You know that to be successful it is important to lead the way by motivating, providing the right tools etc. By communicating your strategies and goals to those who will help you make it happen, you are taking action to get it done. Great!

Now comes the hard part, which is also the most critical element--
understanding the details of how work is performed and then insuring they are done as efficiently as possible so your business strategies and goals become a reality.

For example

If your product or service delivery dates are 2 days late 50% of the time, do you think this might affect your customers' willingness to give you more orders?

  • Do you understand why you are unable to meet customer delivery requirements?
  • Is it because of a problem with order entry, scheduling, not enough staff, inventory problems, human error etc.?
  • Do you know why these issues exist, I mean really know why, down to the root cause?
  • Have you been able to correct these issues?
It's all in the details

Attention to the details may not be as glamorous as developing business strategies, but it is attention to the details that  separates the successful business from the not so successful. Your business strategies must include focusing on the details. Performance management of daily operations will yield productive results.

This is not rocket science either. It is just that, the issues are multi-faceted and require the help of others in your organization.   This results in a longer learning curve and often causes you to "put it off". But once mastered, the learning will be used for success over and over again. If it were simple to explain and learn, then you would see as many new authors on this subject as on leadership and strategy.

Here you will find
information, techniques, insights and tools to help your company operate with ease, efficiency and efficacy.

The focus

The focus of this site is on the "inner-workings" that must come together to produce and distribute desired products and services in the most effective manner. In other words, the management of individual tasks and outcomes. Business strategies with a different focus -- a micro rather than macro approach.  If you are dealing with...

How to start

I know, there are so many variables and it is difficult to get started in the right direction. So, where do you start? Here's what you do. Think about what is going on at your company. Which of the issues above seem to pop up the most? That's where you start.

Do not get sidetracked about other issues, just focus on one. Yes, these issues are definitely inter-related and you will have to deal with multiple issues to solve one, but we are talking about where to start, where to spend your time learning more, hearing how others have solved similar problems and determine the actions you need to take. If you start with the most prevalent problem the others will follow.

Now get going. Click around the site, pick up ideas and start improving on the details... then your  business strategies and goals will be achieved!

Enjoy and prosper,

Kay Graham-Gilbert
